The Waiting Project – Master’s Research

Commissioned by Middlesex University
Waiting is an unavoidable aspect of everyday life, yet it remains surprisingly understudied in design research. For my Master’s project, I set out to explore the emotional experiences tied to waiting — in queues, at transport stops, even in digital communication delays.

At the heart of the study was the “waiting time paradox”: the phenomenon where perceived waiting often feels longer than actual time. Through design exploration, I investigated how boredom, frustration, and anxiety emerge in these moments, and how design might reshape those experiences.

This was one of the most enjoyable and experimental projects I’ve ever worked on — a mix of rigour and madness that pushed me to test new ideas, new methods, and new ways of storytelling. It remains a piece of work I’m always proud to showcase.
